What Happened to the Flu?

Note: I’m not a conspiracy theorist, a COVID non-believer or an anti-vaxer. I’m simply someone questioning a global medical pandemic that has been completely politicised.

The incredible gift we have as intelligent human beings, is the ability to think for ourselves. We live in the “Information Age”– where world events, news, fake news can be streamed 24/7 to anyone in the world with a phone or computer. I wonder if the information overload- much of which is only partly factual or not factual at all, has reduced our ability to be able to critically think?

The world has been turned upside down with this pandemic-life as we know it has dramatically changed. In other countries around the world the statistics are far worse then they are here in Australia. I know there have been deaths and some people are suffering longterm effects of this illness and they should not be dismissed. We cannot be complacent and everyone does need to pull together to do their bit.

Since COVID began the flu and the many hundreds of thousands that die globally every year from the flu has substantially reduced. This is a fact.

Perhaps our hygiene levels are better. Perhaps in some, COVID coincides/coexists with the flu? Whatever the answer the reality is the flu as we know it has all but disappeared. Every year the flu causes mild illness in some, moderate illness in others, serious illness in some and death in others. Like COVID it does tend to affect the more vulnerable in our community. Like COVID many hundreds of thousands of people get a very mild dose with most fully recovering.

I’m absolutely not discounting the serious nature of this illness. What I am doing is opening a dialogue for people to think. To for one moment turn off the media dribble (let’s face it journalism is based on sensationalism rather than facts). To stop listening to the politicians who repeatedly tell us they follow “medical advice”- yet if you research the medical advice from around the world, it is conflicting- so who is right?

Politics and health do not go together. We have choices and those choices should be respected. We also need to step outside this clusterfuck and remember we have very sick people all over the world who are suffering from cancer, heart disease and a million other terminal illnesses. We also have people suffering all sorts of diseases and they are dying everyday. They are suffering every single day.

Most completely unrelated to COVID. Some with COVID. And some from COVID. Let’s not confuse these!

Back to some real facts. In Australia 9 people every single day suicide! 9 people. And let me tell you volunteering for a mental health crisis line it’s absolutely evident we are in a mental health epidemic. The mental healthcare system is broken and the waiting times for people to get help is unacceptable. Where’s the news about that? Where are our politicians and the media to discuss this crisis?

We are in unprecedented times- I get that. But we cannot lose sight of all the other things.

I know of people who are really scared. They have all but locked themselves up at home-not stepping outside. I understand people’s fear but what people do not understand is the health implications of fear.

Stress is the number one thing that sends people to the doctor and one of our biggest killers. Why? Because so many of our illnesses are a result of stress. This is why people who eat well and exercise are sometimes those who are constantly catching every virus. Because our mental and emotional wellbeing has a direct influence on our physical health.

More facts! When we are scared, anxious, worried, angry etc the stress response is activated. Some of you may have heard of the fight, flight, freeze, fawn response? When our body is under constant stress it releases hormones and chemicals which not only affect our heart rate, blood pressure etc it shuts off our immune response.

Yes you read that correctly the stress response shuts off our immune system. Ongoing stress reduces our ability to fight off antigens-making us more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

So let’s look at all these people who now are fearful of this pandemic-with the media constantly feeding the fear narrative. Some of them are doing no exercise, getting no sunlight, perhaps their diets are suffering. The stress response has shut off their immune response. Would you not say this is the perfect vessel for infection?

I’m not suggesting that seemingly healthy people cannot catch COVID. I’m merely suggesting that our body has a great immune system (those of us fortunate enough to not have a compromised immune system). If we do the best that we can to keep our bodies physically, mentally and emotionally healthy, we give ourselves the best chance to keep our immune system optimally functioning. This includes reducing fear, anxiety and stress.

My intention is not to minimise this illness or the impact it has had on the health of some people. And those that have lost their lives, like any loss of life for any reason, is a tragedy. I simply want to highlight that most people DO recover. Some people actually don’t even know they have it. It is NOT the only illness people are suffering from either physically or mentally. And it’s certainly not the only illness people are dying from.

Flooding our brains with this daily fear is unhealthy. Remove the political bullshit. Ignore the media hysteria and use your ability to think critically assessing the actual facts. Yes it’s a different world and yes it can be scary but so can many things in life. Let’s remember we are surrounded by people struggling in one way or the other and their lives and illnesses are just as important. Let’s remember the news and facts are two completely different things.

After a long marriage, 2 children (now grown), a separation and embarking on a brand new life, I have realised life is always a journey. I have made mistakes, I have hurt and been hurt, I have loved and I have lost and at times I completely lost myself and forgot the Queen that I am. As women we are the nurturer, the caregiver but sometimes we underestimate the Goddess within us and my journey has made me realise that when our crown is crooked, we need to adjust it ourselves and remember the Queens that we are! This will be a blog about what I have learnt, what I am continuing to learn and how we can help each other. I will talk about all things love and life and at times this will be controversial but life and love is never black and white but varying shades of grey. We live in a judgemental society and so many of us live our lives according to the expectations of others, rather than doing or being what truly makes us happy. I hope you join me on my journey and on my quest to find that Inner Goddess and we can learn from each other and we can discuss the judgements and societal expectations that hold so many of us back. It's time to seek our inner happiness!!
